Marc Marquez had to resist his natural instinct as fabulously fast risk-taker to secure his historic MotoGP World Championship in Valencia.

Marquez says that temptation almost got the better of him as he momentarily thought to engage title rival Jorge Lorenzo in a battle for victory in the championship deciding race.

But at a crucial point of the 30-lap race, Marquez elected to settle for third place and secure his place in the record books.

20-year-old Marc Marquez has become the youngest ever MotoGP World Champion and the first rookie to take the title since Kenny Roberts in 1978.

Marquez was calm under pressure, settling for a third-place finish behind title rival Jorge Lorenzo and teammate Dani Pedrosa. It appeared the youngster had the bigger picture in mind, avoiding close combat throughout the race to win the title by a margin of four points.

“It’s a dream come true, maybe too early because I didn’t expect it in the first season in MotoGP,” said Marquez. “I cannot explain what I feel. To do it in front of all our fans, to fight with Jorge and Dani – two of the best riders in MotoGP.”

If Marc Marquez is feeling the massive pressure of becoming the first rookie in 35 years to win the MotoGP World Championship, he is not showing it.

After blasting his way to a ninth pole position for the season in front of a euphoric, near-capacity crowd at Valencia, he breezily explained his mindset for Sunday’s title showdown.

Marquez has been in this situation before, albeit not with the intensity and pressure of the premier class title at stake.
