F1: Alonso Wants To Quicken Pace For Brazilian GP – Reflects On USGP

It was a case of mixed fortunes for Fernando Alonso in Austin as he secured second place in the driver’s championship but saw Ferrari lose ground to Mercedes in the battle for second in the constructors’ version.

Alonso had a typically feisty race in Austin, eventually finishing fifth.

Sebastian Vettel won the 2013 United States Grand Prix, with Romain Grosjean taking second from Mark Webber on the start. They remained in that order to the end, despite Webber’s late charge on Grosjean, though further down the order the scrapping was often briefly intense among many drivers.

Lewis Hamilton has faced a few frustrating afternoons in 2013, but in Austin the Mercedes driver was delighted with his drive to fourth place.

He’s had better results this year but the key was that he felt able to push through the afternoon after a particularly frustrating race in Abu Dhabi.

Mark Webber showed he has lost none of his fight by finishing third in his penultimate Formula 1 start in Austin.

Webber had another bad first corner, dropping to fourth from his second starting spot, but after overtaking Lewis Hamilton he chased Romain Grosjean to the flag.

“I was very happy with how I drove today,” said Webber. “I got a very good start. You want to be on the outside for Turn 1 but Romain was already there. I think I made a very good start from the left-hand side, which is not the easiest here, so we did what we could. Lewis also was on the outside for clean braking, so I had to be a little bit careful with Seb on the inside. And then you’ve got to clear people, and you know when you’ve got to clear people you use tires, you use everything up.

Valtteri Bottas scored his first points in Formula 1 after finishing eighth in the United States Grand Prix.

The Williams driver enjoyed a successful weekend in Austin, making it into Q3 for only the second time this season. Then from ninth on the grid, Bottas made an impressive start and managed his tires to score four World Championship points, moving him ahead of teammate Pastor Maldonado – who only has one point to his name as a result of a 10th-place finish in Hungary.
