IndyCar: Andretti penalized for ignoring blue flags

HOUSTON (AP) — IndyCar has fined Marco Andretti $2,500 for failing to heed to an order from race control during Saturday’s race at the Grand Prix of Houston.

Andretti ignored a blue flag to give way to leader Takuma Sato as Andretti tried to stay on the lead lap.

HOUSTON – There were plenty of hot tempers and obscenities on pit road during and after Saturday’s Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston Presented by the Greater Houston Honda Dealers. Can any of that ill will and hard feelings find its way into Sunday’s second race of the Verizon IndyCar doubleheader?

Sebastien Bourdais was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the season Wednesday for unsafe driving during last weekend’s IndyCar race in Texas.

Bourdais was penalized after saying he thought he had positioned himself to prevent Justin Wilson from passing him on Lap 121. When Wilson tried to make the move, the two cars crashed.

Takuma Sato has earned the pole position for Sunday’s second race of the Detroit Grand Prix.

Sato’s final lap in the second of two qualifying sessions knocked Helio Castroneves out of the top spot. Castroneves, who won the pole and finished fifth in Saturday’s first race, will start third under the IndyCar series qualifying rules.

Video: Massive Pileup Claims Several Top Contenders In Long Beach

Sunday’s IndyCar race on the streets of Long Beach was setting up to be an instant classic before a multi-car wreck eliminated several of the top contenders, including race leader Josef Newgarden, pole-sitter Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe.

With 24 laps to go, Newgarden exited pit lane with the race lead ahead of Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe, but had colder tires than the two Andretti Autosport teammates. As they raced into Turn 4, Hunter-Reay made a bold move by trying to pass Newgarden on the inside, and it proved to be costly.
