It’s now more a question of when, rather than if, Sebastian Vettel will win a fourth straight Formula One championship.

Before the midseason break a few weeks ago, there was talk that the Red Bull driver could be still be caught by Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso and a resurgent Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

Mark Webber overcame front wing damage and gearbox concerns to take third place in Monza, having pushed Fernando Alonso all the way to the flag.

Webber damaged his wing when passed by Alonso early in the race, but he gained a place back when he passed Felipe Massa at the pit stops.

A gearbox oil pressure issue caused the team to tell him to shift early to protect his equipment, but there were no further problems.

“It was good to have a clean weekend from start to finish and then fight for top positions, which was certainly the case today,” said Webber. “The start was pretty good but both Sebastian and I, I think, compared to the Ferraris, were not as strong off the line.

Sebastian Vettel is odds on to extend his big Formula One lead over Fernando Alonso after qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in pole position.

Vettel already leads Alonso by 46 points and will be confident of moving further clear of his rivals, given that Alonso starts Sunday’s race from fifth on the grid and Lewis Hamilton — who is third overall in the title race — from a lowly 12th.

Stefano Domenicali says that Ferrari has to put pressure on Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, and not just rely on taking advantage of any problems for the championship leaders.

Domenicali said after seeing Vettel’s pace in FP2 Friday that the Italian team’s main rival could be hard to beat in Monza.

“From what we have seen today, for sure above all in the second session, Red Bull seems to be very strong,” said Domenicali. “I have to say, we have seen them doing a lap time immediately, so normally this is a good sign. Therefore, I am expecting, for sure, them to be very strong. I think it will be a tough weekend, for everyone, because with this kind of temperature also the car will be under pressure.
