Chasing his third straight win in Formula One’s annual night race and seemingly headed for a fourth successive drivers’ championship, Vettel set a time of 1 minute, 44.249 seconds on the Marina Bay circuit; six tenths of a second clear of teammate Mark Webber.Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Singapore, Singapore Grand Prix
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in Friday’s opening practice for the Singapore Grand Prix.
Hamilton, thriving in the high downforce settings of the twisty Marina Bay circuit, was a third of a second clear of his rivals, ahead of Red Bull pair Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was fourth fastest.Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Singapore, Singapore Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton had a difficult first day at Spa, finishing FP2 only 12th and some 1.420 seconds off pace-setter Sebastian Vettel after struggling to find one-lap speed.
Hamilton, who came to Belgium on the back of his Hungarian GP win, said he lacked grip with the low downforce specification used at Spa.
“We have some work ahead of us this evening to get the car feeling just right, but overall today was a reasonable start to the weekend,” he said. “The car feels very different here with the low downforce setup, compared to at the last race, and we need to refine a few areas to get the balance sorted.
“We were able to get some good long-run work done today, and that’s the most important thing for the race. We’ve got time to make the changes required, so I’m optimistic that tomorrow will see an improvement.”Belgian Grand Prix, Formula 1, Formula One, Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes GP, Nico Rosberg, Ross Brawn, Spa-Francorchamps
Sebastian Vettel is confident that he can maintain his winning momentum into the second half of the season, but the German doesn’t underestimate the opposition.
“I think we had a great first part of the season,” he said. “Very good results, unfortunately one DNF, but all in all I think we can be very happy with the first half. Now entering the second half and looking at the calendar, I think it will be very busy for all of us, but I think we have the same reason to be confident as we had starting the season.
