Jorge Lorenzo will celebrate his 27th birthday this Sunday behind the handlebars of his MotoGP Movistar Yamaha… in his 200th Grand Prix race.
Meanwhile, points leader Marc Marquez will be competing in his 100th Grand Prix race, while Dani Pedrosa will be attempting to match eight-time 500 World Champion Giacomo Agostini for third on the all-time podiums list… all while in front of their home crowd.
Pedrosa may have been overshadowed by teammate Marquez so far this season, but he does come into Jerez with a reason to smile, having won at this circuit in 2013.
A repeat would put his win tally up to 26 and his podium tally up to 88, tying him with Agostini for third place behind Rossi and Doohan on the all-time podium list. However, while Rossi, Doohan and Agostini share 20 MotoGP premier class titles between them, Pedrosa has failed to win one.
Marquez, meanwhile, has never picked up a Grand Prix victory on the Jerez Circuit. Perhaps he could add to his success this season by taking the pole and the win for a fourth consecutive outing, but even then the stats aren’t on his side: No premier class rider has won the Spanish GP from pole since Capirossi did so in 2006.
Final practice and qualifying for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Spain will be on the Fox Sports Go App from 6:30a.m. – 8a.m. ET Saturday while the race will be broadcast LIVE on FOX Sports 1 at 7a.m. ET Sunday.
