INDIANAPOLIS – J.R. Hildebrand has literally come “full circle” at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the driver can’t help but smile when he considers the irony of his return to the Indianapolis 500.

The day after last year’s Indy 500, Hildebrand was fired by Panther Racing team owner John Barnes after crashing on the third lap of the race in Turn 2.

News broke Thursday afternoon that J.R. Hildebrand will compete in the 2014 Indianapolis 500 in the No. 21 car fielded by Ed Carpenter Racing.

Hildebrand has competed against Ed Carpenter on the track before, but now, with the 2009 Indy Lights Championship and the 2011 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year to his name, Hildebrand’s resume has proven strong enough to land him a ride with a solid team again.

IndyCar: Fan Video Captures Dario Franchitti Houston Wreck

A fan watching Sunday’s IndyCar Houston Grand Prix captured the moment of impact from Dario Franchitti’s scary wreck on the final lap in dramatic fashion.

Obtained exclusively by Houston’s KPRC Local 2, the cell phone video shows the speed and intensity on the incident where Franchitti’s car launched into the fencing after making contact with Takuma Sato.

Franchitti suffered two fractured vertebrae, a fractured ankle and a concussion in the incident, while 13 fans were treated for minor injuries, two of which were transported to a local hospital.

After making the rounds on the Internet, the video caused IndyCar driver JR Hildebrand to question how cars continue to get airborne.
