IndyCar Hands Down Penalties From Texas Race

Sebastien Bourdais was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the season Wednesday for unsafe driving during last weekend’s IndyCar race in Texas.

Bourdais was penalized after saying he thought he had positioned himself to prevent Justin Wilson from passing him on Lap 121. When Wilson tried to make the move, the two cars crashed.

It used to be easy to pick a favorite for an IndyCar race because the power teams such as Team Penske, Target/Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti Autosport.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to forecast a favorite, however, because the depth of the Verizon IndyCar Series field has increased and a new aerodynamic package along with Firestone tires that quickly degrade over the course of a fuel run has made Saturday night’s Firestone 600 a race of comers and goers.

Tempers flared all around the streets of Long Beach, where drivers declared friendships over after a surprisingly physical race.

Simon Pagenaud refused to accept a post-race apology from Will Power, and Justin Wilson was furious with Scott Dixon. James Hinchcliffe tried to be diplomatic but failed to hide his displeasure with teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay.

The one team smiling at the end of Sunday’s race? Ed Carpenter Racing, which got an unexpected victory from Mike Conway.

Video: Massive Pileup Claims Several Top Contenders In Long Beach

Sunday’s IndyCar race on the streets of Long Beach was setting up to be an instant classic before a multi-car wreck eliminated several of the top contenders, including race leader Josef Newgarden, pole-sitter Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe.

With 24 laps to go, Newgarden exited pit lane with the race lead ahead of Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe, but had colder tires than the two Andretti Autosport teammates. As they raced into Turn 4, Hunter-Reay made a bold move by trying to pass Newgarden on the inside, and it proved to be costly.

Today IndyCar is hosting its annual preseason media day at the Amway Center in Orlando as preparations continue for the 2014 IndyCar Series season which kicks off March 30 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

We will keep you up to date with driver commentary about this exciting event. The following lists approximate times for driver press conferences through out the day:

Between 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. : Graham Rahal, Takuma Sato
Between 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Will Power, Juan Pablo Montoya
