MotoGP: Lorenzo title hopes in meltdown

With his MotoGP championship bid in meltdown after just two races, Jorge Lorenzo has hit back at critics who claim that “mental disintegration” is central to his problems.

And that’s before he faces the question of whether he can regroup and match the flashy and increasingly fast form of his intense rival Marc Marquez.

Two-time MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has taken on an unusual demeanor this weekend. Seeming beyond frustration, the Yamaha ace is carrying himself with a calm sense of resignation. Rival Marc Marquez isn’t a realistic target at the moment. Beating his teammate, Valentino Rossi, scratching his way to the podium, and securing maximum points given the circumstances — those are the goals Lorenzo can focus on this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas.

Last season when Marc Marquez rolled into the Circuit of the Americas, he was still the new kid on the block and just hoping to make an impression.

Sure, he had long been touted as MotoGP’s next great one, but at this time last year, he was all potential and hype but still yet to have won anything in the premier class.

Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi refuse to concede to defeat but the reality check of Marc Marquez’s stunning Honda pace for Sunday’s Grand Prix of the Americas is impossible to ignore.

The COTA circuit in Austin is Honda heaven and when combined with the imperious talent of Marquez – MotoGP’s youngest ever world champion – and quite simply Marquez looks untouchable.

MotoGP stars Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden have paid tribute to Texas veteran Colin Edwards who will retire at the end of 2014.

Edwards, 40, will race in Sunday’s Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin as he counts down to his final international appearance at Valencia in November.
