SportsCars: Prototype Teams Left With Questions After Airborne Accidents

The second and final day of TUDOR United SportsCar Championship testing at Daytona International Speedway ended with the DeltaWing atop the overall time sheets, as the rest of Prototype and Prototype Challenge cars were sent packing after and Continental Tire’s joint decision to suspend prototype testing on the grounds of safety.

A number of tire-related incidents on Tuesday, including accidents for both and Joao Barbosa that resulted in their DPs becoming airborne, has prompted teams to question what can and will be done to rectify the issues, with only 67 days until the season-opening .

Testing for Daytona Prototypes, P2 and Prototype Challenge cars was suspended Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway on the grounds of safety, due to a number of tire-related incidents, two of which caused airborne accidents for newly upgraded DPs.

According to  VP of Competition & Technical Regulations, Scot Elkins, the decision to ground all prototype machinery, except for the DeltaWing coupe, was a joint decision with partner Continental Tire, as they work to come to the bottom of the issue.

Richard Westbrook escaped injury following a massive accident Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway in testing.

The Englishman’s No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP suffered an unidentified failure while braking into the high-speed Turn 1 section on the 3.56-mile oval/road course, sending the car airborne and into a series of rolls, according to multiple eyewitness.

In a joint effort between Michael Shank Racing, Ford Racing and Continental Tire, the 2012 championship team will aim to set a new track record at Daytona International Speedway by eclipsing the 210.364 mph lap laid down Feb. 9, 1987, by NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, who pushed his Ford Thunderbird to the top of the speed charts in qualifying for the Daytona 500.

Ford confirmed Tuesday that it will debut its new engine in next year’s with a new-look Daytona Prototype featuring the brand’s styling cues.

The Blue Oval took the wraps off its brand-specific bodywork, primarily featuring a revised nose and other aero developments from the Gen-3 Riley bodywork, which had been used in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series since 2012.
