The entire world of F1 continues to contemplate the reigning quadruple world champion’s current struggle even to keep up with his new Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

Four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel isn’t used to being asked to step aside for a teammate. Now it’s happened twice in two races.

Vettel, only months removed from wrapping up his most dominant season in F1, was instructed to allow debutant Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo to pass him midway through Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix as the German’s speed began to fade due to his rapidly degrading tires.

Mercedes showed again that it’s in a different class from its rivals, with Hamilton’s teammate Nico Rosberg taking second place — the third time in four races this season the pair have finished one-two.

“This is a team on a roll, that’s for sure,” Hamilton said. “I’m going to be working hard, we’re going to keep working hard because obviously the others are pushing to catch us.”

Daniel Ricciardo continued to impress by earning second on the grid in a tricky wet qualifying session in China – pipping teammate Sebastian Vettel by half a second.

Ricciardo didn’t have an entirely perfect afternoon, but did the lap time when it mattered.

“I think that was very pleasing to do it at the end,” he said. “To be honest, I struggled a bit throughout the session, at least personally I didn’t feel like I was getting on top of the conditions, but then the last set of inters right at the end of Q3 we managed to get a bit more out of it and I put a good lap together, so pretty pleased to be on the front row.”
