Montoya Wins First IndyCar Race In 14 Years

Juan Pablo Montoya has won the race at Pocono Raceway, the highlight of a triumphant return to open wheel racing after seven years in NASCAR.

was second to make it a 1-2 finish Sunday for team owner Roger Penske. Montoya won for the first time in the CART/IndyCar Series since 2000 and had his first major victory since he won a road course race at Watkins Glen in NASCAR in 2010.

With double points awarded in the 500-mile races, Castroneves moved into a tie for the points lead with Team Penske teammate . Power was hit with a blocking penalty on Castroneves late in the race and had to serve a drive through penalty, costing him a shot at racing for the win. He finished 10th.

In open wheel or a stock car, Juan Pablo Montoya knows how to top the speed chart at Pocono Raceway.

Driving for Team Penske in his open-wheel return after seven years in NASCAR, the Colombian knocked off Penske teammate on the final qualifying run Saturday.

Montoya had a two-lap average of 223.871 mph for both a track record and his first career IndyCar pole.

Now they have to do it again one more time Sunday.

The American, Colombian and Brazilian who have celebrated some of their biggest career moments at Indianapolis each made daring runs over the final 80 minutes Saturday to take the top three seeds heading into Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 shootout. Carpenter finished first with a four-lap qualifying average of 230.661 mph. Munoz was second at 230.460.

IndyCar: Pagenaud Stretches Fuel To Win On Indy Road Course

officially opened for the month of May with a chaotic road course race that started with a wreck, saw James Hinchliffe and the mayor of the city injured by flying debris, and, finally, Simon Pagenaud celebrate a fuel-mileage victory.

Pagenaud won the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on Saturday, the first Series race on IMS’ road course, by stretching his fuel the final 29 laps.

The Frenchman was one of several drivers to gamble on gas, and he took the lead when Oriol Servia had to stop with four laps remaining. Pagenaud managed to make it to the finish for his third series victory despite having to keep an eye on his mirrors.

What should have been one of the glorious moments of Sebastian Saavedra’s young career as a Verizon Series driver turned out to be an incredible disaster. Saavedra was starting Saturday’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis from the pole position at the .

As the 25-car field was awaiting the lights to go out for the first-ever standing start of an IndyCar race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Saavedra’s car stalled. Cars sped past him as IndyCar officials kept the green light on with some of the cars squeezing to the inside of Saavedra’s Dallara/Chevrolet and the pit retaining wall at very high speed. Some made it but Carlos Munoz drilled the back of Saavedra, ripping the rear assembly from the car.
