Yamaha rivals Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have not written off their chances in Sunday’s San Marino Grand Prix despite the record-breaking qualifying pace of Honda rival Marc Marquez.

Both Rossi and Lorenzo intend to carry the fight to the flashy and fearless rookie Marquez in the 28 lap race.

The trio share the front row of the grid with Lorenzo (second) and Rossi (third) planning instant attacks on Marquez’s stunning pace.

Marquez claimed pole position with a massive 0.5s gap over the Yamaha pair.

Jorge Lorenzo knew he had just one chance to keep his slim world championship hopes alive.

The result was a daring last corner overtake to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and halt, at least momentarily, the momentum of rookie ace Marc Marquez.

Lorenzo’s Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi hailed the win as “incredible” but also admitted that it be “still difficult” for Lorenzo to retain his title.

The win came on the back of Lorenzo’s bold race strategy of quick starts and then backing his front-running pace to try and gap his Honda rivals Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

The fast, flowing corners of Silverstone gave Lorenzo his crucial advantage with the Yamaha M1 although he had not planned on leaving his winning move until the final corner.
