Red Bull master designer Adrian Newey has mocked Formula 1′s new engine rules, claiming they have produced slower cars without achieving the intended green goals.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Newey — who designed the cars that won Red Bull the past four drivers’ championships — said the new 1.6 liter V6 turbo hybrid engines have increased costs and slowed down the cars for little benefit.

Adrian Newey’s pre-season fears about ‘submarining’ Formula 1 cars may have been realized. Red Bull’s criticism of F1′s all-new era had to be heard amid the depth of the reigning world champions’ winter crisis after four consecutive seasons of dominance.

Designer Newey, however, had expressed alarm about the new, low front noses, arguing not only that they are ugly, but they might also be dangerous.

Adrian Newey has admitted his rush to design Red Bull’s title-defending car for 2014 was partly to blame for the early-season technical crisis.

Much of the blame for the team’s situation, where the RB10 struggled merely to run at the recent Jerez test, has fallen on troubled engine supplier Renault.

Amid World Champion Red Bull’s testing nightmare at Jerez, bigwigs Christian Horner, Adrian Newey, Helmut Marko and the visiting team owner Dietrich Mateschitz all departed southern Spain.

While rival Mercedes and Ferrari-powered teams have managed to collect dozens upon dozens of early preseason laps, the tally amassed by Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in the troubled RB10 numbers 21.

Red Bull endured another disastrous day in Jerez as Daniel Ricciardo ran only three laps, and he failed to record a time before the team confirmed that it would not run again today.

On his first outing this morning he stopped on track with smoke rising from the rear of the car. The team is continuing to work with Renault to address packaging issues.
