MotoGP: Riders, Teams Preparing For First Preseason Test

Next week will see the much-awaited opening MotoGP test of 2014 as the field gathers in Malaysia. For the first time this year, Factory and Open machines will share the track as riders and personnel get to grips with new teams.

Following on from the post-Valencia Grand Prix test in November that saw new bikes break cover for the first time, 2014 now begins in earnest with the traditional early-year trip to the Sepang International Circuit on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

Ten of the 11 teams were in action this week at Jerez for the first preseason test of 2014. While the four-day test allowed teams to gather data and adjust to the new cars and technical regulations, it also gave fans an opportunity to see the new-for-2014 cars on track.

Here’s a look at each team on track, with the exception of Lotus. The Enstone-based squad decided to sit out the Jerez test to continue development of their E22. Technical Director Nick Chester believes the team will be ready for the next preseason test in Bahrain on Feb. 19-22.

Given the mechanical carnage in this week tires have not received a lot of coverage, but nevertheless it was an important test for Pirelli as the company had its first chance to run with the new cars, and in both wet and dry conditions.

Pirelli also gave the teams a helping hand by providing a ‘winter compound’ designed to allow them to log miles in the cool of a European January. The fastest time of the week, ’s 1m23.276s on Thursday, was set on new mediums.

Rain for the first half of the day gave drivers the chance to get in wet running, but conditions were better later on. However, a series of red flags disrupted progress, and in effect the overall times were meaningless.
