It took 80 laps of frantic racing at Long Beach to declare a winner, but Takuma Sato broke through to lead a Honda 1-2-3 with Graham Rahal and Justin Wilson far behind in his rearview mirrors.

The A.J. Foyt Racing driver came home 5.36 seconds ahead of an impressive Graham Rahal, who turned his nightmare season around with a determined run on Sunday.

And if his winning drive wasn’t enough, Sato also ended a dry spell for the Foyt team that lasted 3941 days since its last IndyCar Series victory. Sato, whose last win came at the Macau Grand Prix F3 race in 2001, had gone a whopping 4161 days since his last victory, and also rewarded loyal team sponsor ABC Supply with their first win in IndyCar competition.

Sebastian Vettel made it two wins in four races in 2013 with a dominant victory in Bahrain – despite Lotus, Ferrari and Mercedes all setting the pace at various stages during the weekend.

Vettel led from the third lap, having quickly disposed of Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg.

Even the German admitted that he hadn’t expected to be able to win so easily, given the level of competition.

Fernando Alonso put the disappointment of his early retirement in Malaysia behind him with a superb victory in China.

Alonso didn’t put a foot wrong, keeping his tires alive better than most of his rivals and finding consistent pace.

“Definitely it was nearly a perfect Sunday for us, with not any problem in the race,” said Alonso. “The start was clean, it was good. We managed to overtake Kimi Raikkonen. And then in the first stint we managed to pass Lewis Hamilton as well. The car felt a little bit better on the degradation side, let’s say. And then in the rest of the race, obviously you need to take care of the tires a little bit, you need to manage the gap with the guys behind.”

2012 IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay led from pole at Barber, led the most laps and scored a gritty win over Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves.

The Andretti Autosport team claimed their second consecutive victory to open the 2013 season as RHR used his Chevy power to streak away during the first third of the race and came back to pass Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves–which included a NASCAR-style donut from contact with the Brazilian–to take back the lead which he held to the finish.
